The SLECI technology (Self-regulating, Low Energy, Clay based Irrigation) is a self-regulating subsurface irrigation system that uses the actual suction force of the surrounding soil for regulation of the system’s water release.

In this technology water is transferred to the soil via cylindrical clay emitters which are hollow inside. The clay emitters are connected to each other with small tubes of polyethylene and buried into the soil near the plant root. This system is then connected to a water supply (e.g. water tank, pressure water connection).

The theory of operation is based on a self-regulating effect. It describes the linkage of suction tensions between the clay emitter and the surrounding soil. Dry soil means high water release and saturated soil means very low water release.

The SLECI technology enables a very effective and water-saving irrigation of plants. Also the SLECI system can operate without electricity.
Currently the system is tested in many African locations. The test fields are supervised by local scientific institutions.
