Synergies

By actively involving the entire value chain in participatory research, co-design and co-development throughout project activities, DIVAGRI shall activate synergies and realise a natural alignment of interest, creating new bio-based value chains and business models. Local supply chains for DIVAGRI BBS will connect producers directly to markets while the creation of local biorefineries will foster employment (new green jobs) and development of new skills.

DIVAGRI will build on state of the art research and products in the field of irrigation and bio-based solutions and will actively seek synergies with other relevant EU, national, and African research and innovation projects especially in the field of Sustainable Intensification in Africa under the EU-Africa R&I Partnership on FNSSA.

Smallholders play a critical role in addressing the challenges of food security, poverty and climate change. DIVAGRI will leverage the water-energy-food-employment nexus to access synergies for each of these dimensions. The project will contribute to improved livelihoods through increased farm productivity, additional value creation and diversification. Productivity increases and diversification also enhance food security and yield resiliency. African countries are net buyers of food and are very vulnerable to food price increases and spikes. By providing technologies and know-how to boost local production, these vulnerabilities will be reduced. Enhanced water and land management technologies and practices will support community resilience to climate change impacts.
